Vera Wang – romance is never too much
Vera Wang is one of the designers that purposefully follow the classic line but at the same time keep getting their inspiration from the newest trends. Chaos is a taboo that could hardly take place in the well organized life of the average American woman. The clothing designed by Vera Wang became a symbol of luxury in a heart beat by presenting an incredible combination between the classic look and the modern vision. In the world of fashion she’ s known mostly for her wedding gown collections, very popular among the Hollywood stars.
Vera Wang is born in New York on the 27th of July, 1949 but is actually half a Chinese. She studied at the popular Chapin School and after that graduated from Sarah Lawrence College willing to become an actress. But that dream turned out to be a non-durable one and after a long self-search she graduated with a degree in art history. She inherited her unexceptionable sense for fashion from her mother that often took the little Vera to fashion shows in Paris. Vera rediscovered her love to the fashion design as she studied for a while at the Sorbonne and after returning to United States, at the young age of 23 became the youngest fashion editor for Vogue.
For the love of fashion
As a girl, Wang trained intensely as a figure skater, and competed at the United States Figure Skating Championship. Maybe that partly influenced the elegant and gracious line dominating the designer’s collections. Years after she left the skating-rink she came back by designing the costumes for the figure skating champions of the United States. Wang was a senior fashion editor for Vogue for sixteen years but in 1985, she was turned down for the editor-in-chief position currently filled by Anna Wintour. She joined the team of the well known Ralph Lauren right away as an accessory designer for two years. During her long-lasting professional experience in Vogue that gave her the opportunity to meet the best designers and stylists she must have been influenced by the tempting world of the fashion industry – a world of beauty and imagination. Vera learned from the source the fine points of the profession which proved to be extremely useful for her own business. In 1990, she opened her own design salon which became well known thanks to her bridal gowns that later became her trademark.
The happiest day
It was her own wedding day that ultimately inspired her to start her own business with a wedding gowns design and to leave her unique mark to the world of high fashion. Provoked by the lack of choice when it comes to wedding gowns, she decided to design them herself and soon became one of the best American designers - something she never thought she will be. The classic style of the high society debutants is an inspiration for Vera Wang when she creates her wedding gowns. The gowns present an amazing luxury and the white color is not the only one considered, it’s in the company of the tender purple and pink nuances. The dominating fabrics are silk, lace and tulle, accompanied by small pieces of embroidery or big ribbons. The simple gowns are freshened by fine accents in different colors that create an interesting look in the otherwise classic gowns and a feeling of playfulness without being obtrusive. The combination between the tempting discreet beauty and the everlasting elegance turns out to be the formula of the success for Vera Wang who continues to be a favorite designer of the Hollywood stars especially when it comes to the most special day in their lives.
Star dust
By finding the right balance between the innovatory concepts and the traditional elegance she wins over everyone in Hollywood and her gowns could be seen quite often on the red carpet of film premieres and glamorous ceremonies. Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Jessica Alba and Meg Ryan are only a small group of her admirers. Meeting the needs of the celebrities, the designer creates unique dresses that give a one-of-the-kind look on the red carpet. It’s Vera Wang who made the unique wedding gowns for Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Thalia, Jessica Simpson, Victoria Beckham, Sharon Stone, Uma Thurman and many others. She made a short appearance in the popular TV series “Ugly Betty” as the designer of Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams); at the same episode Missis Beckham herself made an appearance.
The missing parts
Vera Wang never stopped surprising with interesting ideas through the years and keeps on expanding her brand name. Looking for a new challenge she decided to create accessory collections - jewelry, eye ware, shoes and fragrances with her brand name. She also wrote the book - “Vera Wang on Weddings”, well illustrated wedding guide that advises the brides-to-be how to become dazzling beauties for the happiest day of their life. The book was released at 2001. In fact it was when it occurred to her to start designing not only the wedding gowns but also all the items and accessories for the wedding day. The elegant details designed by her brought her a remarkable success and she keeps on creating new collections with a greater inspiration. Two years ago she won the Council of the Fashion Designers of America Women’s wear Designer of the Year. An year later she was awarded with another price from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
American luxury
Influenced by the traditions of Paris and the haute couture, Vera Wang is using expensive fabrics, luxurious accessories and beautiful details. Her wedding gowns follow a simple line in combination with a modern vision for the styles of the past to create an incredible mix between the new vision and the classical spontaneous charm. The designer has something for everyone in her collections – from simple style to ornate ball gowns. She says that her clothes are choosing their owners. Elegance, small exquisite details and her innovation made her popular world wide soon and her models reveal the free spirit of the modern woman with a tender sensuality.
Vera Wang currently lives in her favorite New York City with her husband, Arthur Becker, and their two daughters, Cecilia and Josephine who both attend the Chapin School just like their mother did. The designer’s last collection is inspired by the Ancient Rome, reflected through the vision of the modern New York. The free falling fabrics, mainly of satin, stand out with the feeling of comfort and slight negligence that they create. The color accents are purple, silver and green and the lengths stay under the knees. The collection includes elegant dresses for the romantic ladies as well as unisex outfits for the young independent girls. Along with the boutique models she also creates outfits at affordable prices because quite a few people could spare 10 000 dollars for a dress. Vera Wang is sometimes named to be the uncrowned queen of the bridal fashion, others call her the “intellectual one” among the fashion designers. Undoubtedly she manages to charm us in her own unique way, bringing the forgotten romance with her classical flavor.
